Description

Mayor's London Scientist | Secondary School Programme Launch

City Hall is delighted to be working with the British Science Association, STEM Learning and the Royal Institution to offer the Mayor’s London Scientist 2019/20 programme.

Together we want to inspire many more young Londoners to consider a career in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) – particularly girls and students from underrepresented backgrounds. The programme is fully funded for eligible secondary schools and offers a range of high quality activities to engage Key Stage 3 students in STEM.

Is my school eligible?

Your school is eligible if it is a non-selective state secondary school in Greater London that meets any of the following criteria: 75%+ BAME student cohort, 30%+ FSM student cohort, or is a SEND school, or Alternative Provider.

Benefits of the programme

  1. Full funding for CREST Awards

Saving you up to £150 per class, you will receive funding to complete the Bronze CREST Award with your students. CREST is the top accreditation scheme for schools in the country, providing national recognition for STEM projects with certificates awarded to all successful students.
  2. Mentorship from a STEM Ambassador

We will match you with a local STEM professional who will provide guidance and personalised support for running your STEM projects. From scientists and designers to technicians and engineers, there are STEM Ambassadors in your area who will help your students succeed.
  3. Science Teacher CPD

Develop your lessons through fully funded CPD delivered by the IoE on the ‘Science Capital Teaching Approach’, worth £100 per participant.
  4. Complimentary tickets to the Royal Institution

Your students will get free entry to demonstration-packed events where they can learn about cutting-edge research and meet scientists from around the globe, saving you £160 per classs.
  5. Showcase your projects at the Big Bang London Fair

In the summer, your students will get the opportunity to demonstrate their projects to a panel of judges at the Big Bang Fair in London, and win prizes. They may even find themselves with a place in the national Big Bang finals!
  6. Celebration Reception at City Hall

To thank schools and celebrate their success, we will invite participating teachers to join us on City Hall’s top floor for an evening drinks reception surrounded by panoramic views of London’s skyline.
